Invitation to take part in a study – a monitoring and early warning system for the Oder (SpectralRiver)

On behalf of the Space Technology Park – Research, Development and Innovation Ltd and the German institute IHP (Leibniz Institute for High Performance Microelectronics), I am pleased to invite you to take part in a study, the results of which will be used to develop a monitoring and early warning system for pollution that may occur in the River Oder.

The survey to which we invite you to take part forms part of the cross-border SpectralRiver project (No. BBPL0300114), co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg VI A Deutschland/Brandenburg-Polen Programme.

Experience from previous years has clearly shown how crucial it is for the protection of the Oder river ecosystem to establish a consolidated, rapid and operational water monitoring system and an early warning system for threats such as blooms of the so-called ‘golden algae’ (Prymnesium parvum).

The SpectralRiver system addresses this challenge by combining:

  1. Satellite remote sensing (data from the Sentinel-2 and LANDSAT 8/9 satellites for real-time analysis of chlorophyll and temperature),
  2. Low-altitude multispectral scanning using drones (UAVs) on designated sections of the River Oder,
  3. An integrated digital platform (linked to the SmartRiver2 and Alert24 systems) for data visualisation, report generation and risk forecasting.

Why is your vote so important to us?

We are committed to ensuring that the solution we develop is fully functional and useful in the day-to-day work of the institutions responsible for environmental protection and water management. We want to tailor the data formats, reporting frequency and alerts to your actual operational requirements.

We would be very grateful if you could complete a short questionnaire regarding your requirements for the system we are designing:

What do you gain from collaborating and monitoring the project’s progress?

  • Real-time access to operational water quality indicators and algal bloom risk levels.
  • The opportunity to take part in free taster workshops.
  • Participation in a cross-border knowledge-sharing network and the development of effective emergency procedures for the Lubuskie region and Brandenburg.

We would like to thank you very much for your time and your contribution to protecting the environment of the River Oder.
